How to repurpose video content across multiple channels

October 26, 2021   |   15 Min Read

Did you know that you can repurpose video content for other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and Tiktok?? While it’s important to create video content with a specific platform in mind, repurposing your video content for multiple channels is completely possible (and encouraged!). It’s an excellent way to get more mileage out of the video content you’ve worked so hard to create! In this post, we’ll look at different ways to repurpose your video content and tips on how to make sure it’s optimized for each channel, from TikTok to YouTube.

Consider the specs of a video

If you’re making video content for social media, you probably have a specific platform in mind, such as Instagram, TikTok, or Pinterest. And this is a fantastic strategy! It’s critical to plan out your video content with a specific channel in mind.

A clear example of this would be reposting a 15-second TikTok video to YouTube. Because YouTube viewers expect longer-form video content that isn’t vertically shot, it’s unlikely to perform well. Of course, this does not rule out the possibility of repurposing video content for other social channels! Repurposing video content is a simple way to save time and make better use of the content you worked so hard to create.

You simply need to be aware of which channels are best suited to your video content – for example, a short DIY video may perform well on Pinterest and TikTok but poorly on Twitter. Simultaneously, you must consider video “specs” such as aspect ratio, video length, and so on. Every social media platform, from Twitter to Pinterest, has unique video requirements. A 30-minute YouTube video, for example, will be relatively easy to repurpose for IGTV or Pinterest because both platforms allow for longer videos. That IGTV video would be much more difficult to repurpose for Twitter, where videos are limited to 140 seconds.

If you intend to repurpose your video content, you must consider the video requirements of each platform. Here’s a quick recap:

Instagram Feed

Aspect ratios range from 1.91:1 to 4:5.
Duration of the video: 1 second to 1 minute

Instagram Stories

Aspect ratios range from 16:9 to 4:5 and 9:16.
Duration of the video: 1 to 15 seconds

Reels

The aspect ratio is 9:16.
Duration of the video: 1 to 60 seconds

Facebook Feed

16:9 to 9:16 aspect ratio
Maximum video length: 240 minutes

Stories on Facebook

Aspect ratios range from 1.91:1 to 9:16.
Duration of the video: 1 to 20 seconds

Twitter Video Prerequisites

16:9 to 9:16 aspect ratio
Duration of the video: 0.5 seconds to 2 minutes and 20 seconds

Video Requirements for TikTok

16:9, 1:1, or 9:16 aspect ratio
Duration of the video: 5 to 15 seconds (or 60 seconds when you string four 15-second segments together)

Youtube Videos

Aspect ratio: The standard aspect ratio for YouTube on a computer is 16:9, but other aspect ratios are supported as well.
Video length: 1 second to 15 minutes (verified accounts may upload videos that are longer than 15 minutes).

It’s simple to repurpose video content for other social channels, and it’s a great way to get more out of your awesome content!
